ENGINE
PURPOSE Converts chemical energy into mechanical energy to produce power to move the vehicle.
CONSTRUCTION An engine is made up of many different parts. Many parts are made of cast iron or cast aluminum. Many surfaces are made by machine to precise measurements. Different systems in the engine are: intake, exhaust, cooling and lubrication.
CONSTRUCTION (cont’d) The engine is ‘sectioned’ into a ‘top end’ & a ‘bottom end’. The cylinders may be in a ‘V’ shape or ‘inline’. All parts work as one ‘unit’. The failure of just one part can result in noise, poor operation, or severe damage.

INTERNAL COMPONENTS
LOCATION Depending on vehicle design, an engine may be placed at the front, rear, or middle of the vehicle. Many front wheel drive vehicle engines are mounted sideways in the frame. It is easy to find…just look for it.
PROBLEMS Engines create noise, heat, and pollution, all of which must be carried away efficiently. Engines wear from high mileage, abuse or neglect. Worn engines cause excess pollution, have poor fuel efficiency, and have poor performance.
DIAGNOSIS Modern engines require special skills, knowledge and tools to properly diagnose and repair. Each separate system in an engine requires different methods of diagnosis and repair. Noises and smells are usually the first indications of problems.
APPROXIMATE COST OF REPAIR Engines are a MAJOR part of an automobile. Minor repairs to an engine: water pump, leaking gaskets, etc., can range from $300 to $1200. Major engine repairs: cylinder heads, camshaft replacement, etc., can range from $1500 to $2500 Engine overhauling/rebuilding can go well over $3000-$4000. Engine size and design contribute to determing the cost of repairs.
