Julia Gillard biograghy BY DAVID

Child hood Julia Gillard was born in 1961 to a nurse and age care worker. At the age of four ,her family migrated to Australia and she spent her childhood in Adelaide. She attended Mitcham Demonstration School and Unley High School in South Australia.

Ms. Gillard started her arts and laws degree in the University of Adelaide. In 1983 she became the national Education Vice-President of the Australian Union of Students (AUS).Later,  and moved to Melbourne to complete her degree at at Melbourne University. Later that same year, she was elected President of AUS. After finishing her degree, Gillard began working as a solicitor for the industrial law firm called Slater and Gordon, which she would later, in 1990, become a partner at While working there, Gillard switched her aims to that of a career in federal politics.

Political life In 1996, Gillard entered the political world serving as John Brumby’s (Opposition Leader of Victoria then) Chief-of-Staff. Julia Gillard first contested the Federal seat of Lalor for the Australian Labor Party in 1998 and was elected that year.

From 1998 until 2001, Ms.Gillard served on a range of committees including, the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Workplace Relations. In 2001, Julia was appointed Shadow Minister for Population and Immigration and following that, took on responsibilities for Reconciliation and Indigenous Affairs in 2003. She also served as Shadow Minister for Health from 2003 to 2006.

On December fourth, 2006, Ms Gillard was elected as Deputy Leader of the Australian Labor Party and served as Shadow Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations and Social Involvement. After the 2007 elections ,Gillard became the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and Social Involvement. On June 24th, 2010 and September 14th, 2010 Julia Gillard became the first female Prime Minister of Australia.
