Worship (1) What is True Worship?

What is worship? A challenge to define because of the varied ways it is carried out in scripture. Worship occurs from the time of Abel and Cain to the throne of God in heaven

What is worship? Προσκυνέω (proskuneo) “to kiss toward” “to make obeisance, do reverence toward” (Vine’s) “To express in attitude or gesture one’s complete dependence on or submission to a high authority figure” (BDAG)

What is worship? Προσκυνέω (proskuneo) Understanding you are in the presence of God and rendering due reverence to Him John 4:24 Matt. 4:9-10 Heb. 1:6, 11:21 Rev. 4:10, 5:14, etc.

What is worship? Σέβω (sebo), To express in gestures, rites and ceremonies one’s allegiance Matt. 15:9 Romans 1:25 Acts 16:14, 18:7

What is worship? ε ὐ σέβεια, (eusebia)- To demonstrate awesome respect toward God, piety, godliness Acts 17:23 1 Tim. 2:2, 2 Pet. 1:3, 6-7 (godliness)

What is worship? Λατρεύω (latreuo) primarily, a word that means to serve. Often associated with worship. Philippians 3:3 Acts 24:14 Heb. 10:2, 12:28 Matt. 4:10 (serve)

Worship is: Sacred Worship is a holy act. It is a solemn occasion due the greatest of reverence Hebrews 12:28 Old Testament worship demonstrates this cf. Exodus 20:8-11

Worship is: A way to draw near to God Hebrews 10:22 James 4:8 In it we demonstrate our appreciation of Him and His work. He recognizes devout worship Heb. 13:16 cf. Phil. 4:18

Worship is: A way to give back to God As an expression of our gratitude we give back to Him David – 1 Chron. 29:10-19, 21:24 We can NEVER repay God, BUT we give Him what we can – Heb. 13:15-16, Luke 17:10
