Christoph F. Eick: General Information Class Evolutionary Programming Upcoming Events COSC 6377 n Project2-Report (4-7 single-space pages) --- Report is due Fr., Dec. 3, 11p; bring program listing to Demo on December 7. –1. Description architecture of your system and techniques employed ; evolution of the system –2. Run your System for Benchmark1(available on Friday) and report and analyze the results –3. Brief Evaluation of the System (1-3 paragraphs) –Appendix: Results of Running your System for Benchmark1 (e.g. printout current rule-set after seeing 300, 600, 900, and 1200 examples. n System Demo (takes place on Tu., Dec. 7 schedule will be on the web soon); Program will be run for first and second benchmark during the demo. n Project1 Webpage/Post Analysis Meeting: Tu., Dec. 7, noon-1p –Idea is to generate a webpage with the project results before Dec. 19. –Students that participate in generating the webpage will be mentioned in the webpage, and can use it for advertising purposes. n Quiz2 will be given out on Tuesday, Nov. 30 and is due one week later at 4p; bring your solution and give it to me during when you are demoing your program.

Christoph F. Eick: General Information Class Evolutionary Programming Subfields of Artificial Life n Self Replicating Systems (Cellular Automata, Computer Viruses) n Emergent Behavior (how can simple interacting units create complex behaviors) n Simulation of Biological Systems –How do flocks of birds fly, schools of fish swimm? –Simulation of ecological systems –Simulation of RNA-folding n Evolutionary Computing n Robots and other Machine Life Forms (e.g. Carl Sim’s Virtual Creatures) n …

Christoph F. Eick: General Information Class Evolutionary Programming Quiz2-Substitute (Draft) n I expect you to spend 3-6 hours on this problem. n Choose an 3 Artificial Life web sites (some that have demos should be preferred) of your own liking. Evaluate the three web sites and select the web site you like the most. Do not select Survey Websites! n Write a brief one paragraph summary for each of the two web sites that you did not select. n Then write a page report (single spaced) concerning the web-site that you liked the most that addresses the following topics: what sub- field of Artificial Life is addressed by the web site, summarize presented technology, what can the techniques/tools that were presented in the web site be used for? What can students learn from looking at the web site? How do you rate the technical quality of the presented technology? Do you think the work presented in the web site is useful and should be funded by government money? Why did you prefer this web site over the other 2 web sites?
