The School Budget

Understanding the School Budget Key Questions: What do you think the school budget could be? How do you think the school budget is spent?

Swanwick Hall School: The Budget The school budget is the amount of money, which we have available to spend on educating students each year. This includes the money, which we spend on all staff/ resources, which contribute to making the school function effectively for students.

Where does our school budget come from? The government fund the Local Authority (Derbyshire County Council): Age Weighted Pupil Unit- a sum of money will be allocated to the school for each student. A direct school grant. A specialist school grant. YPLA: Fund the Sixth Form.

How much money do we get each year? £5.3 million £780,000 additional income (grants). £62,000 from the previous budget. Total: £5,440,000

Who decides how the money is spent? Mr Fawcett, Mrs Marston and the Governors, with the support of the Senior Leadership Team and other staff. The students also have an important role in deciding how the money is spent.

What are the key principles to consider when spending the school budget? The key question: what is going to best benefit the school? Best value. Financial rules and regulations. Auditing.

How much money is spent on educating students? 100%

What do we spend the most money on? Staffing: £5,000,000

How much money is spent on cleaning the school? £100,000

How much money is spent on student safety? £15,000 is spent on making the site a safe place.

Does each department get the same amount of money? kkk No this will vary each year, depending on each department’s improvement plan. The department will decide what resources they need to improve, and the leadership team will decide if this is possible at the time.

Do you ever run out of money before the end of the year? NO! We plan very carefully to ensure that we don’t.

Can you work out the major difference...? Tesco is a business, which focuses on making money. Swanwick Hall School is NOT. All of our money is spent on educating students.
