Mobile Masts Sri Lanka currently has no mobile phone network. Vodoofone wish to cover this Island with mobile phone masts to create a profitable network. Your task is to advise Vodoofone on how this may be achieved. Initially they have set you two research tasks to estimate the area of the island and to work out how many masts would be required. After this research has been completed they would like you to use a predetermined budget to ensure maximum coverage of the island.

Mobile Masts Task 1 Estimate the area of the Island, by tracing the outline and laying this on a 1cm 2 sheet of paper. Remember the scale 1 cm 2 represent 100km 2. Task 2 A mobile phone mast transmits in every direction. It travels a distance of 12.5 km. Each mast covers an approximate area of 490 km 2. This can be simulated on your map by using a 2 pence coin. Using your answer to task 1, calculate the minimum number of masts required for total coverage of the Island. Using the coin to draw circles on your map, work out how many masts would be required in reality to give total coverage. Task 3 Vodoofone have a budget of £5 million. They have three different masts available to them, as listed below:- Mast TypeCoverage - Radius Coverage – (Approx) Area Cost Mini-Mast12.5 km (2p coin)490 km 2 £250,000 Midi-Mast18 km1018 km 2 £370,000 Maxi-Mast30 km2827 km 2 £835,000 Use this information to gain the maximum coverage of the Island’s area, without going over budget.

Mobile Masts Extension Sheet Info so far Vodoofone have a budget of £5 million. They have three different masts available to them, as listed below:- Mast TypeCoverage - Radius Coverage – (Approx) Area Cost Mini-Mast12.5 km (2p coin)490 km 2 £250,000 Midi-Mast18 km1018 km 2 £370,000 Maxi-Mast30 km2827 km 2 £835,000 Task 4 Vodoofone also want their signal to be accessible to the maximum number of people, Therefore, they have added an extra constraint. The network must now cover, without gaps, all areas with a high population. You will be given a new map showing highly populated areas. You must also ensure coverage to all the major towns and cities marked on the map. At the same time Vodoofone will expect maximum Island coverage.
