Sickle Cell Disease Angelica Gomez UC Merced

What is Sickle Cell Disease? Normal cells are small circular shaped blood cells that contain a protein that carries oxygen, hemoglobin, and runs smoothly through the blood vessels.

What is Sickle Cell Disease? A disorder where the blood cells are crescent shaped and contains abnormal hemoglobin. This prevents the blood cells to go through the blood vessels and transport the oxygen. “Bowl of Cereal”

How can one get Sickle Cell Disease? Sickle Cell is an inherited disease. The disease can be passed on to the off spring or the trait can be passed down without having the consequences of sickle cell disease.

Hydroxyurea A cure has not been found yet, there is still research being done on it. However there is a drug that helps ease the pain, Hydroxyurea. This helps blood cells stay round and flexible in order to go through the vessels.

Closest to a Cure Like “copy cats”. They make healthy blood cells and keep on replicating. Normal cells outnumber the sickle cells.
