Pastor Ken Frese: Living in a Bubble as Trustworthy Servants Sermon slides November 13, 2011 First Lutheran Church of Venice, California

San Andreas Disastrous

Thomas Jordan, Director Southern California Earthquake Center “The San Andreas Fault is locked and loaded”.

The “BIG ONE” 50 times 50 times larger than the 1994 Northridge Quake (>7.8 vs 6.7) >1800 fatalities >1800 fatalities (vs 72) >53,000 injured >53,000 injured (vs >9,000) ½ million people homeless ½ million people homeless $ billion property damage $ billion property damage (vs $20 billion) US Geological Survey

We must be prepared to take care of ourselves – for 7 days! fire stations 1994: 104 LA City fire stations maxed out in the first 5 minutes. supply routes Freeways, roads, supply routes impassable Powergas Power out; gas probably out Phones Phones out (cell phones and ?) Water Water probably out (or contaminated) Hospitals Hospitals overwhelmed, reduced capacity, or out altogether.

>Katrina >Katrina is coming to Southern California (1162 killed, $100 billion damage)!

Good News! How well a community comes through a disaster is directly related to people’s prior preparation and how effectively they work together in time of need. HAVEDON’T NEED NEEDDON’T HAVE It’s better to HAVE a plan you DON’T NEED than to NEED a plan you DON’T HAVE!

Why Prepare? 1.Lessens our anxiety so that we can think more clearly before, during, and after a disaster. 2.Reduces our misery during the days following the disaster. 3.Reduces the possibility of serious injury. 4.Gives us a head start on recovery. 5.Protects against possible civil unrest. 6.Enables us to help others.
