Presentation transcript:

Mrs. Manning Room 204

 As your child continues the journey in education I will make every attempt to provide an enriching experience. The children will travel setting their own pace according to their individual development. The educational experience will encourage the development of the whole student including spiritual, physical, social, and intellectual growth. The successful experience in the early years will foster a love of learning for the future academic programs awaiting the students.

 RELIGION: the core content of our second grade program includes: the Blessed Trinity, the Sacraments, the Mass, Mary, Holy Days and Special Feasts. The students will also prepare to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation.

 The new approach to Reading and Language Arts will generate a great desire for reading and writing. We will implement a program immersed in theme based literature. There will be six themes throughout the year. Our first theme will be based around the seasons. A sampling of books include Poppleton in the Spring by Cynthia Rylant; The Days of Summer by Eve Bunting and William Low. Poetry will also be enjoyed, for example, Bed in Summer by Robert Louis Stevenson. Writing will be entertaining. Your children will write about being a leaf blowing in the wind, where would you go!

 The program will build on the skills mastered in first grade. Number concepts include counting, basic facts of addition and subtraction, place value. Addition and subtraction skills will be developed throughout the year. Multiplication will be introduced in the spring with basic facts of 2, 3, 5, and 10. Problem solving, geometry, measurement will continue to grow. We will implement a new series which is related to the Language Arts program. We will utilize Go Math Common Core by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

The Lab Learner program actively engages the students with many hands on activities for each cell. Social Studies will include topics such as community, colonial times, and geography.

 Every week a child is chosen to be “Special Person of the Week.” We will celebrate birthdays on the nearest class day to the actual birth date. Summer birthdays will be “special” birthday dates.  The birthday child may bring in a favorite book, toy and a poster of themselves!

-School communications: weekly presents all information for the week -Snacks: pretzels may be ordered or snacks from home may be enjoyed at recess -Lunches: the full-service program is available. Check for information -Forms and /or monies should be submitted in an envelope labeled with your child’s name, amount of money, and contents -Please notify the school of any change of address, phone number, or dismissal procedure with a written note -Early dismissal requires a note and the student will meet the parent in the main office -Vacation: assignments missed due to vacation may be completed within a week of returning. The student’s assignments will be collected and waiting for his/her return -Due to the inevitability of runny noses and necessary clean up, I would appreciate the children whose names begin with the letters A-M to bring in a box of tissue and a roll of paper towels and the children whose names begin with the letters N-Z to bring in a box of baby wipes. THANK YOU!

 Homework should take your child approximately 30 minutes per night. To insure a smooth re-entry to school I will post the homework on my Wikkispace. As the students become familiar with the daily routine they will begin to copy their homework assignments as of November.

 This fee will be utilized for special events such as Spider Day, Holiday happenings, and activities to complement the reading/writing program, etc. Amount $30.00 due by Friday, September 30 th. Thank you for your support.  Label everything and anything brought to school!! This includes school supplies, as well as sweaters and gym uniforms.

 You will receive a letter requesting the Saint your child will be representing at the Celebration. To assist in the portrayal of their Saint the student will be asked to wear a simple costume. The children will create a poster of their saint at home for a grade. The students will celebrate with their prayer partners after the Celebration. Details will be sent home as soon as they are finalized.

 The children will prepare to receive this sacrament  this year. All information will be sent home as it  becomes available.

 Looking forward to working with you and your child as a team to ensure a successful experience. Thank you so much for sharing your child with me!!!
