Lab Safety Pre-Quiz… Please take a sheet of paper from the basket on the overhead and answer the following questions: 1.T or FYou can chew gum during lab. 2.T or FUse a hot plate when heating flammable substances. 3.T or FNever work alone in the lab. 4.T or FYou don’t need to wash your hands at the end of the lab period. 5.T or FSafety goggles must be worn any time chemicals, glassware, or heat is used.

Basic Safety Rules  Use common sense.  No unauthorized experiments.  Don’t take anything out of the lab.  Handle chemicals and glassware with respect.  NO horseplay!  Obey the safety contract.

Student Safety Guidelines  Personal safety  General safety  Fire safety  Safety contract

Personal Safety 1.Safety goggles should be worn by everyone (including visitors) upon entering the science laboratory. Any time chemicals, glassware, or heat is used you must wear safety goggles. NO EXCEPTIONS !!

 I'm a little Chemist, short and stout,  Here are my goggles, here are my eyes.  When I don't wear my goggles,  my teacher shouts,  PUT THEM ON OR YOU GET OUT!

Wear Your Safety Goggles! Which would you rather read? FLINN Scientific, Inc "Your Safer Source for Science Supplies" - Poster

2. Your apparel should be appropriate for laboratory work. Sandals, long hanging necklaces, heavy jewelry, and excessive and bulky clothing should not be worn in the laboratory. Cotton clothing is preferred over nylon, polyester, or wool.

3. NO gum chewing, food, or drink is permitted in the laboratory. 4. NEVER taste chemicals. NEVER touch chemicals with your hands. 5. Hands should be washed thoroughly with soap and water at the conclusion of each laboratory period.

Safety Features of the Lab 6. Know the locations of safety equipment such as eyewash fountains, fire extinguishers, emergency shower, and fire blankets.

7. NEVER WORK ALONE IN THE LABORATORY. You should only work in the laboratory while under the supervision of your teacher and with your assigned class. 8. All accidents should be reported to the teacher immediately, no matter how minor.

General Safety 9. You should prepare for each laboratory lesson by reading all instructions before you come to class. Follow all directions and review with your teacher the safety precautions needed to conduct the experiment safely before you begin. Only materials and equipment authorized by your teacher should be used.

10. Everyone should be alert and proceed with caution at all times in the laboratory. Take care not to bump another student, and remain at your lab station while performing an experiment. An unattended experiment can result in an accident.

11. Everyone should recognize and heed all safety symbols and cautions incorporated in the procedure of the laboratory experiments.

Safety Symbols Eye Protection Required Clothing Protection Required Hand Protection Required Chemical Safety Caustic Substance Heat Protection Glassware Safety Laboratory Hygiene Sharp Object Hazard Waste Disposal

12. Work areas and apparatus should be kept clean and tidy. At the conclusion of each laboratory experiment, always clean and wipe dry all apparatus and laboratory work areas. Any chemical spills or broken glassware should be reported immediately to the teacher.

Fire Safety 13. Know the proper fire drill procedures and the location of fire exits.

14. Extreme caution should be exercised when using a Bunsen burner. Keep your head and clothing away from the flame and turn off the Bunsen burner when it is not in use. Gas burners should be lighted in accordance with your teacher’s instructions. Before leaving the laboratory, check to see that all gas valves and hot plates are turned off. NEVER leave a lighted burner unattended. Use a hot plate instead of an open flame whenever a flammable liquid is present.

15. Only lab manuals and lab notebooks are permitted in the lab table area. Books, purses, and such items should be placed in your desk or storage area.  ADDITIONAL WRITTEN AND VERBAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS MAY BE GIVEN IN CLASS.

IN ADDITION, PLEASE NOTE: Students will be removed from the laboratory by the teacher and will receive a zero for that lab period, if:  Their personal appearance or dress is such that they can cause injury or distraction to themselves or others;  They are behaving in such a manner that they can cause injury to themselves or others;  They are not following the prescribed safety rules for the laboratory or the particular activity being conducted.  They have not completed the pre-lab activities that are needed for them to work safely in the laboratory.

Safety Contract  TO INDICATE THAT YOU HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE SAFETY REGULATIONS, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO SIGN AND DATE A SAFETY AGREEMENT.
