THE LEGALIZATION ARGUMENT: SHOULD MARIJUANA BE LEGALIZED?

THE ARGUMENT There has been a compelling debate in our country concerning whether or not the use of marijuana should be legalized. A considerable amount of Americans are on board with the idea of legalization, and have strong views about the benefits of taking this action. However, there are also a significant amount of Americans who argue the potential negative effects that it will have on our country, and have concerns for the possible health risks.

YES: IT SHOULD BE LEGALIZED When used in moderation, it is considerably less harmful than tobacco or alcohol. Limiting the drug is a violation of the personal freedom of Americans. Legalization leads to lower price, therefore theoretically lower crime rate. Benefits of medical uses, especially in regards to cancer. Reduction of street justice due to drug disputes. Potential source for tax revenues. Give civil courts more time to deal with more serious cases.

YES: IT SHOULD BE LEGALIZED Drug dealers and terrorists would lose business. FDA regulation would insure quality and safety of the drug. For some people it is one of life’s pleasures much like sex, alcohol, cigarettes, or food. In addition to recreational use, there are many industrial, and commercial uses of the crop. Drug busts in a flawed judicial system has turned young people into life long criminals.

NO: IT SHOULD NOT BE LEGALIZED Marijuana is often used as a stepping stone or “gateway drug” leading to harder drugs. Driving under the influence, as well as other dangers, and crimes will be increased. Considered morally wrong. It will increase the chances of the drug falling into the hands of children.

NO: IT SHOULD NOT BE LEGALIZED Due to drug related arrests, criminals who commit drug related crimes, and are likely to commit more serious crimes have been take off the streets. Those users who abuse the drug would undergo physical damage. Increase dangers of secondhand smoke. Could possibly lead to legalization of harder drugs down the road.
