The Human Brain

physical description basic parts functions of its parts

3 lbs or 1.2 kgs 2% of our body weight uses up 20% of the oxygen within our body

Human Brain Rat Brain

The human brain has wrinkles or folds called the “sulcus”.

Our brain is a soft mass of glistening, grayish white tissue, protected by the skull.

What precautionary measures will we take to protect our brain?

Let us explore the basic structures of the human brain!

Cerebrum Cerebellum Brainstem Hypothalamus

Cerebrum

Where is the cerebrum located?

Activity # 1: Brain puzzle Roles of the Cerebrum Activity # 1: Brain puzzle Arrange the pieces of the puzzle to form a picture of the human brain.

Roles of the Cerebrum The cerebrum is the thinking part of the brain. e.g. It allows us to solve puzzles. It supervises intellectual activities.

2 Hemispheres of the Cerebrum Left Hemisphere is analytical. It helps in reading and forming words and language.

2 Hemispheres of the Cerebrum Right Hemisphere is focused on abstract things. It helps you recognize faces and colors.

Activity # 2 Left vs Right Directions: Say aloud the ink color of each word.

Four Lobes of Each Hemisphere

Locating the Four Lobes of Each Hemisphere

Frontal Lobe = Personality (Judgment of right and wrong) and Memory Diana is hungry. She wants to go out and eat hamburger. But her frontal lobe tells her it is not right and she should listen to the lesson.

Parietal Lobe = Touch and Taste Now Diana goes home. She sees a hamburger left in the kitchen. She tastes the hamburger. Her parietal lobe tells her it is delicious and hot.

Temporal Lobe = Hearing and Smell Now Diana is about to sleep. But then, she hears her mother's voice telling her it is time for dinner. Then, she smells her favorite food!

Occipital Lobe = Vision Now Diana is tired. So she relaxes and watches TV. She sees Coco Martin in a commercial. Her occipital lobe tells her Coco Martin is handsome.

Refresh your memory: Sticking Mr. Cerebrum Locate the Frontal, Parietal, Occipital and Temporal Lobes. Identify their roles.

Locate the Cerebellum...

Role of the Cerebellum Activity no. 4 Gather round the newspaper! Pick three members from your group. At the count of 3, members will step into the folded newspaper and keep still until time is out. Balance is the key to win!

Its work is to coordinate movements, maintain posture and balance. Role of the Cerebellum Its work is to coordinate movements, maintain posture and balance.

daily activity that involves activating your cerebellum? Can you give one daily activity that involves activating your cerebellum?

Locate the Brainstem

Activity # 5 Challenging the power of your brainstem! How long can you hold your breath?

Injure this part, do you think we could survive? The brainstem is in charge with our breathing, heart rate, swallowing and wakefulness. Injure this part, do you think we could survive?

Refreshing our memory: Who is in charge?

Locate the Hypothalamus...

Activating the hypothalamus... Remember the feeling when..?

Emotions originate from your hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus alerts us with our need to satisfy our hunger, thirst, and sexual appetite.

Let’s recap!

Share your insight: What is the most important function of the human brain you are most appreciative of?

Activity: .Label the parts of the brain and identify their functions.
