Acts 9 God’s Radical

Who is Saul of Tarsus? Had it together! Highly Educated Politically Powerful Social Elite Wealthy Very Religious Had it together!

Acts 9 – Saul’s Conversion 1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

Acts 9 – Saul’s Conversion 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" 5 "Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,"

Acts 9 – Saul’s Conversion 6 "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do." 7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.

Acts 9 – Saul’s Conversion 10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, "Ananias!" "Yes, Lord," he answered. 11 The Lord told him, "Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight."

Acts 9 – Saul’s Conversion 13 "Lord," Ananias answered, "I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name."

Acts 9 – Saul’s Conversion 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name." 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Acts 9 – Saul’s Conversion 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength.

Saul’s Insights Jesus is alive. Galatians 3:13 “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” 1 Corinthians 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles 2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Revelation 3:20 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.

Saul’s Insights Jesus is alive. God is a God of grace. 1 Timothy 1:12-16 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength…appointing me to his service. 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy…14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 …Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. Saul’s Insights Grace = undeserved, unearned acceptance Jesus is alive. God is a God of grace.

Saul’s Insights Jesus is alive. God is a God a grace. “An isolated Christian is a defeated Christian” Jesus is alive. God is a God a grace. Unity between Jesus and His followers. Acts 9:4 "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" 1 Corinthians 12:27 Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it.

Acts 9 – After Saul’s Conversion 20 At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.

Acts 9 – After Saul’s Conversion 21 All those who heard him were astonished and asked, "Isn't he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn't he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?" 22 Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ.

Acts 9 – After Saul’s Conversion 23 After many days had gone by, the Jews conspired to kill him, 24 but Saul learned of their plan. Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him. 25 But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall.

Paul’s Life Temporary! Paul was a RADICAL. Realized the implications of serving God. Temporary!

Paul’s Life Paul was a RADICAL. “this depressing word means rubbish and muck of many kinds: excrement, rotten food… Nastiness and decay are the constant elements of its meaning; it is a coarse, ugly, violent word implying worthlessness, uselessness, and repulsiveness” (Colin Brown, NIDNTT) Paul was a RADICAL. Realized the implications of serving God. Paul’s radical lifestyle was costly. Philippians 3:8 What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them “CRAP”, that I may gain Christ

Paul’s Life Paul was a RADICAL. Realized the implications of serving God. Paul’s radical lifestyle was costly. Paul recognizes that he is a model for us. Why not have PAUL be your role-model? 1 Corinthians 11:1 Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.

The BIG QUESTION Which is better: A cautious, hesitant commitment to Christ? OR Radical, sold-out spirituality? Hebrews 11:6b He is a rewarder of those who seek Him 1 Corinthians 9:25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Matthew 6:33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 2 Peter 2:22 …A dog returns to its vomit… Matthew 25:23 Well done, good and faithful servant! Mark 8:35 but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it.
