Clinical and histopathological correlations in rhinosinusitis Student: Blebea Cristina Conferentiar: Muhlfay Gheorghe Assistant: Lostun Gabriel

 Rhinosinusitis is a common and well- recognized clinical syndrome that affects a significant percentage of the patients from a Otorhinolaringology Department. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is now a well established strategy for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS) unresponsive to medical treatment.

 The objective of this study was to assess the correlation between histological and clinical diagnosis in rhinosinusitis, by evaluating the results of histopathological examination of postoperative material from FESS.

 This study is a retrospective analysis based on patients who underwent FESS over a 5 years period.  The analysis covered 673 results of routine postoperative histopathological examination material from Targu-Mures County Hospital's Department of Otorhinolaringology who underwent surgical procedures between the years  The histopathological examination was conducted in Hematoxylin and Eosin and PAS staining in Targu-Mures County Hospital's Morphopathology Department.

 Having the ethical approval from University of Medicine and Pharmacy Tirgu-Mures, demographic data were analyzed via Chi- Square test and ROC curves using MedCalc. A p value of less than 0.05 considered significant.

Fungal rhinosinusitis

Schneider papilloma

 The strong correlation between clinical inspection and pathological diagnosis of FESS Is histological confirmation needed?

 The low sensitivity of clinical diagnosis of Schneider papilloma can be reason to perform routine histopathological examination of FESS.

 The close correlation between clinical inspection and histopathology outcomes indicates that in pacients with suspected CRS with or without NP histopathology has little to no clinical value.  It might be considered the improvement of diagnosing the inverted papilloma
