 Sent to 200 academic libraries, specifically the U.S. academic institutions receiving the most NSF funding in the last three years to explore a perceived gap in surveys of the data management problem space  65 out of 66 responses (98%) of respondents believe that librarians are not the only institutional stakeholders involved in managing research data, and that researchers must also be involved  57 out of 62 responses (90%) indicated that library science programs and academic libraries should work together to provide certification opportunities in research data management for researchers and students across disciplines as well as library professionals and librarians in-training  49 out of 59 of responses (78%) indicated that training programs in research data management could be implemented at academic libraries without library science program involvement  33 out of 66 responses (50%) indicated that the library anticipated investing in new library positions and/or infrastructure within the next 5 years to support research data management 11/1/11National Status of Data Management 3

 The University of North Texas and CLIR/DLF received an IMLS award of $227K this year to undertake a research project to investigate how the LIS profession can best respond to emerging needs of research data management in universities  This project will address broad new issues concerning the emerging roles, expectations, and practices arising from requirements announced by NIH, NSF, IMLS and other funding agencies for data management plans as part of proposals 11/1/11National Status of Data Management 4

1. Data Management Plan Policies and Practices: What trends are observable in the data management plans and associated institutional policies now being implemented at research institutions in response to federal requirements? 2. Stakeholder Expectations: What are the expectations of key stakeholders in the research community concerning the long- term management of research data generated in universities and the role of information professionals in such efforts? 3. Preparation Needed: What skills, infrastructure, training, and other preparation are needed for professionals charged with data management responsibilities, based on both expectations of stakeholders and observed trends from data management policies now being implemented? 11/1/11National Status of Data Management 5
