Heading Poetry 11 Mr. Dunne 3 rd December

Last week’s homework Everyone count up how many lines you created for your poem. To acquire the prize, there is one more thing you must do – say the poem ALOUD.

A new Age is dawning. No longer shall we be creating poems. Instead we shall now be critically analysing them.

Objectives  To look at a poem and examine it.  To complete pre-reading and post-reading questions.  To practise using quotes and using exaggeration.

This is the name of our first poem. Answer the following ‘pre-reading’ questions before we start. 1. What words do you associate with dragons (or any monster)? 2. What do you think this beast’s lair is like? 3. Who might be in there and why?

On my first day of school, I walked into the Dragon’s lair, I was asked my name and I told her Claire, We sat at tables and were given work, But still I felt that Dragon lurk, Someone asked a question, I heard a gasp, The room got hot, I felt a blast, Of red hot flame above my head, “We ‟ ll soon be dead!” someone said. “I want my mummy!” was the cry, “If we stay here we’ll surely die!” But then she sent us out to play, And said, “Come back another day!” You must be joking Dragon dear! I’ll never ever return here!

Post reading questions – write your answers in full sentences and use quotes. 1. Did you like the name of the poem and could you think of a better, more accurate name? 2. Is there any evidence of the ‘dragon’ doing anything bad? What does she do. 3. Is the poet / student exaggerating a bit (saying things are worse than they are)? 4. Do you like this poem and why?

Exaggeration – you can beat any monster You have superpowers – super strength, speed, vision, etc. Write a brief essay: sentences about all the things you could do. Write about how easy your everyday life would be.

Homework That essay Also – a reflective journal. You have one. I want to start using it in this class.
