8.5 Square Roots

Squaring a Number What does it mean to square a number? It means to multiply a number by itself! What is 2 squared? What is 5 squared?

What are perfect squares? Perfect squares are what result from squaring numbers. Find your Perfect Squares table in your notes and let’s complete that table. NumberSquareNumberSquareNumberSquare

What’s a Square Root? Finding a square root is the opposite (or inverse) of squaring a number. To find the square root of 36 you must figure out what number multiplied by itself equals 36. That number is the square root of 36!

Square Root Words: A square root of a number is one of its Words: A square root of a number is one of its two equal factors. Symbols: where a = b · b Symbols: where a = b · b

The symbol, called a _____________ _________, is used to indicate a square root. This indicates the positive square root of 36. This indicates the negative square root of 36.

Example 1 Simplify each expression. a.b.c.d.e.f.

A radical expression is an expression that contains a square root. An example would be the The easiest way to simplify a radical expression is to separate the radical into smaller radicals that contain perfect squares. Hint: Try to find the largest perfect square that divides evenly into the radical. Use Your Perfect Squares Table!!!!

Product Property of Square Roots Words: The square root of a product is equal to the product of each square root. Words: The square root of a product is equal to the product of each square root. Numbers: Numbers: Symbols: Symbols:
