Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 8–3) Main Idea and Vocabulary Example 1:Display Data Using a Bar Graph Example 2:Display Data Using a Histogram Example 3:Analyze Data to Make Inferences Example 4:Analyze Data to Make Inferences

Main Idea/Vocabulary Bar Graph: Is one method of comparing data by using solid bars to represent quantities. Histogram: A special kind of bar graph that uses bars to represent the frequency of numerical data that have been organized in intervals. Display and analyze data using bar graphs and histograms.

Example 1 Display Data Using a Bar Graph TOURISM Make a bar graph to display the data in the table below. Source: The World Almanac

Example 1 Display Data Using a Bar Graph Step 1 Draw a horizontal axis and a vertical axis. Label the horizontal axis with the countries and the vertical axis with the number of vacation days. The scale on vertical axis is chosen so that it includes all of the vacation days per year.

Example 1 Display Data Using a Bar Graph Step 2 Draw a bar to represent each category. In this case, a bar is used to represent the number of vacation days per year for each country. Answer:

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 1 SPORTS The table shows the average number of miles run each day during training by members of the cross country track team. Make a bar graph to display the data. A.B. C.D.

Example 2 Display Data Using a Histogram BASKETBALL The number of wins for the 29 teams of a basketball league for a season have been organized into a frequency table. Make a histogram of the data.

Example 2 Display Data Using a Histogram Step 1 Draw and label horizontal and vertical axes. Add a title. Step 2 Draw a bar to represent the frequency of each interval. Answer:

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 2 SPEED The speeds of cars on a stretch of interstate are clocked by a police officer and have been organized into a frequency table. Make a histogram of the data. A.B. C.D.

Example 3 Analyze Data to Make Inferences DINING OUT The bar graph shows the number of times people dine out each month. How many people are represented in the histogram? Justify your answer. Answer: So, 50 people were surveyed. Find the sum of the heights of the bars in the histogram = 50

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 3 A.75 houses B.80 houses C.85 houses D.90 houses HOUSING The bar graph shows the number of houses sold in various price ranges. How many houses are represented in the histogram?

Example 4 Analyze Data to Make Inferences DINING OUT The bar graph shows the number of times people dine out each month. What percent of people surveyed ate out more than 40 times per month? number of people who ate out → more than 40 times per month → total number Write the fraction as a decimal. Write the decimal as a percent. Answer: So, 24% of the people surveyed ate out more than 40 times per month.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 4 A.30% B.37.5% C.46% D.57.5% The bar graph shows the number of houses sold in various price ranges. What percent of houses were sold for more than $200,000?
