GRAPH EXPLORE CATEGORICAL DATA

TRY THIS: Do the following summarize a categorical variable or a numerical variable? For a tennis player, the average speed of a first- serve during one match. For a volleyball player, the percentage of successful serves during one game. For a NASCAR driver, the amount of time per lap in a race. Numerical Categorical Numerical

STATISTICAL STUDY 1. Hypothesis 2. Collect Data 3. Analyze Data 4. Conclusion The 4 steps to a statistical study Today we will work with categorical data. We will then displaying data. 3. Analyze Data Therefore, displaying data is the first part of which step of a statistical study?

LEBRON JAMES Did LeBron James choke in the 2008 playoffs? To find out if LeBron James choked, let’s compare his regular season with the playoff game. LeBron James took 359 three-point shots during the entire season and 70 three-point shots in the 2008 playoff game. Since the attempted shots are different, we’ll use percentage to compare the two.

CALCULATE PERCENTAGE During the regular season, LeBron James made 113 of his attempted 359 three-point shots. Percentage: = = 31.5% During the playoff, LeBron James made 18 of his attempted 70 three-point shots. Percentage: = = 25.7%

DISPLAY THE CATEGORICAL DATA The distribution of categorical data can be displayed by creating any one of the following graphs: Pie Graph Bar Graph Segmented Bar Graph

PIE GRAPH Pie Graph: A slice of a circular pie represents the portion each category contributes season: 31.5% shots made 2008 playoff: 25.7% shots made Three-Point Shooting Performance for LeBron James (2008) shots missed 68.5% Regular Season Performance 74.3% shots missed Playoff Performance

BAR GRAPH Bar Graph:Height represents the outcome. Three-Point Shooting Performance for LeBron James (2008)

SEGMENTED BAR GRAPH Segmented Bar Graph: A slice of a rectangle represents the portion each category contributes. Three-Point Shooting Performance for LeBron James (2008)
