Reusable Bags Project Presentation Created by Ms. Russell

Purpose of Project To inform our HES community about the dangers of plastic bag use To get people more interested in recycling other things To do something using what we have learned to make a difference

My Original Idea Contact Harris Teeter See if we can purchase reusable bags in bulk (large amounts) Make information sheets and flyers to advertise reusable bags and take orders from HES parents Students would group bags and deliver to classrooms

Approval If we do a project this large (collecting money and school-wide) Mrs. Horner would need to give us permission Mrs. Horner said she needs to know all of the details and hear what the students are planning and willing to do

What they Said Cannot purchase a large number of bags, but they often donate the bags Dawn offered to see if we could get 450 bags Idea 1: REJECTED!

My Second Idea Get 450 free reusable bags from Harris Teeter Give a reusable bag to each student and staff member at HES with information packets included People wouldn’t have to purchase the bags and every HES family would be informed

from HT Representative Tammy, I spoke with our corporate communications department and their directive due to our Together in Education program is to generally not support additional school donations. Mainly because they fall into the…"but you did it for that school" routine. HOWEVER, I do have a small budget for donations but I'm afraid that we probably won't be able to do the 450 bags but perhaps a smaller amount based on something… 1) You could make a fact sheet about a plastic bag waste and then parents could sign a pledge card to receive a reusable bag. 2) Our plastic film recycling contest is starting this month. The grade or class that brings in the most bags gets the HT bags. 3) We could develop an environmental puzzle and all correct entries get a bag. Just throwing out some ideas to still get you some bags but limit them to less than 450. Sorry for the bad news but hopefully we can work something out. THANKS - Dawn Idea 2: REJECTED!

My Reply: Hi Dawn, Thanks for getting back to me. I have been thinking about how to still turn this into a useful project by modifying my original idea, and I think I have one that will work. Soon, we will have a winter carnival, and my children could set up an information booth to handout materials and fact sheets that we create. We could also raffle off any bags that you donate to us. Do you think that would work? Any number of bags you could donate to us would be great. I would also be interested in the informational materials we talked about on the phone. Thanks, Tammy Russell My address at school is: 402 N. Nash St. Hillsborough, NC 27278

What Now?  We still have the same purposes: Inform our HES community about the dangers of plastic bag use Get people more interested in recycling other things Do something using what we have learned to make a difference BUILD AN AWARENESS

What is Awareness? Knowledge    Knowing Understanding Responsiveness  Having a Reaction When you know something is true, you are more likely to try to do something about it

New Ideas: Brainstorm

What Would We Need to Tell Mrs. Horner? 1) What are the facts? 2) What do we want to do? 3) Why is this important? 4) What’s our plan for getting it done? (steps? timeline?) 5) Who is responsible for each task?
