Hello and Welcome to the 2012 Gregory G. Leptoukh Online Giovanni Workshop Welcome to the workshop, “live” from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and many other locations around the world.

First of all, I’d like to dedicate this workshop to the memory and vision of Gregory G. Leptoukh, who passed away suddenly on January 12, It’s hard for us to believe that Greg has been gone for less than a year. Greg is survived by his wife Masha and his daughter and son. We continue to develop Giovanni with Greg’s guiding vision and ideas still fresh in our minds and hearts.

Biographical Information Greg was a native of Georgia (the country, not the southern state in the U.S.) He received the M.S. degree in Theoretical Physics and the Ph.D. degree in Cosmic Ray Physics from Tbilisi State University, Georgia (USSR), in 1975 and 1985, based on work done at the Moscow Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, Moscow State University, and Tbilisi Institute of Physics.

At the GES DISC Dr. Leptoukh joined the Goddard DAAC in 1997 to support SeaWiFS data distribution, followed by heading the MODIS data support team. In May 2003, he became the Science Data Manager of the GES DISC, a position in which he excelled. In the past five years, Dr. Leptoukh was Principal Investigator of four NASA-supported projects and Co-I for six other NASA projects related to developing tools to support the advancement of Earth science data access, fusion, online analysis and visualization of atmospheric data. His most recent research interests included multi- sensor and model data intercomparison, data quality and provenance, aerosol data fusion, and design and development of online data analysis tools.

National and International Activities Greg was also an active member of several organizations, including the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners, the GEWEX Aerosol Panel, and the Earth Science Data System Working Group; and he advanced international scientific partnerships, including the Northern Eurasian Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI) and the Monsoon Asia Integrated Regional Study (MAIRS).

In Greg’s honor The Leptoukh Lecture (Earth and Space Science Informatics) Data management and analysis, large-scale computation and modeling, and hardware and software infrastructure profoundly affect the research capabilities of all AGU disciplines. In 2012, the Earth and Space Science Informatics Focus Group has established the Leptoukh Lecture to recognize advances in these fields and their contributions to Earth and space science. Named in honor of the late Dr. Greg Leptoukh, a pioneer in satellite data quality and provenance, the Leptoukh Lecture aims to identify and support achievements in the computational and data sciences. Dr. Chris Lynnes will give the inaugural Leptoukh Lecture at the 2012 American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting.

Acknowledgments This workshop would not have been possible without the support of the NASA GES DISC civil servant management, particularly Steve Kempler and Chris Lynnes; staff members Atheer Al-Jazrawi and Randy Barth; our tireless IT staff; and the skilled and largely unsung developers and programmers that have made Giovanni the remarkable tool that it is today, and who are working on making it an even more useful tool for science.

And also… And I also want to thank all of the presenters who have given their time to participate in this workshop, to provide a view of the science and applications that they are conducting with Giovanni.
