NARGIS Study abroad English baby TOEFL PREP

Information words in the beginning of lecture The purpose of a text always appears at the very beginning Focus on information words Today, we’ll focus on/concentrate/discuss… Today, our topic is… Let’s… Read these information words several times a day

Information words at he end of the lecture It always appears some conclusion or some content which refers to the questions Information words To sum up To conclude/in conclusion In summary/to summarize Finally Therefore From this, we can see that…

When students listen to a recorded lecture or a conversation, they should understand the central or main idea in it. Then they should skim(mengambil) the recording for key points, important facts, purpose and the relevant details that connects the key points.

STEPS FOR PRACTICING 1. listen to the lectures and take notes Practice note taking whenever you are listening to something in English – only write down key words or phrases, use abbreviations for long words and always write in English. Record only the major points – you won’t have time to write down the minor, unimportant details in the exam.

2. Practical understanding A wide range of vocabulary is necessary for this process because, the recordings in listening test are usually from academic background. Practical understanding also becomes a must to find the purpose of a lecture or a conversation.

3. Determine the purpose of a conversation or speech– what do you think the speakers are trying to do? Are they angry? Trying to resolve a conflict? Sad? Express an idea? Practice this technique every time you hear English including English movies or TV shows, even people you hear speaking English on the street ! This will help you focus on the key points and improve your ability to filter out information that is not necessary for the TOEFL listening exam questions.
