EARTH CHARTER FINAL PROJECT By Rhoda Robinson

STUDENT ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM (SEEP) Helping students make environment friendly decisions in order to live to their full potential

MOTIVATION We live in a changing world, the environmental challenges of our present world are fast increasing and evolving in a new dimension, young people need to be equipped with information on how to deal with climate change (adaptation) and how they can prevent it (mitigation).

MOTIVATION Article 6 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change deals with climate change education, training and public awareness. It stresses the importance for countries to develop and implement programmes to educate their population on climate change and its effects and developing adequate responses.

PERSPECTIVE Young people need to be well-informed about their environment the consequences of their behavior so that they can play a strong role in combating climate change and promoting changes in attitudes and behaviors. Education and training in the field of climate change can also prepare young people to take advantage of the new employment opportunities arising from the shift to a greener economy.

EARTH CHARTER PRICIPLE PRINCIPLE 2. Care for the community of life with understanding, compassion, and love. PRINCIPLE 14. Integrate into formal education and life-long learning the knowledge, values, and skills needed for a sustainable way of life.

OBJECTIVES To educate and inform students on environmental issues affecting them and how they can be actively part of the solutions. To enhance student creative skills in the areas of music, drama and poetry to solve social problems. To help students become advocates of the change they want to see in their society.

LAYOUT The program is targeted at senior secondary school students and designed to teach them the link between their health and the environment and ways in which they can preserve and take care of their environment thereby improving their health as well.

LAYOUT The program will make use of a curriculum that will teach them step by step methods through which they can make environmentally friendly decisions. The program will involve teaching them about waste management and recycling plastic materials into household items such as flower vase, plastic bags, ornaments etc.

OUTCOME Students learning and be able to teach others how to take care of the environment using different creative methods. Students encouraged to take action by planting trees to reduce pollution, and maintain a recycling system. Environmental clubs will be established in the schools which will give students the opportunity to become environmental peer educators.

CHALLENGES The possible challenge this program might face include procurement of seedlings that will be planted by the students, and willingness of establishments to embrace change required for a healthier environment.

BUDGET This budget is an approximate amount of how much it would cost to start the program in three school in Lagos, Nigeria. Total amount = ₦1,400,000.00 One million, four hundred thousand naira. (approx. $8,500 USD)
