The Binder

Purpose The Binder is A tool for academic success Where all work and handouts are kept in one place – no excuses for anything being anywhere else

Materials 3 inch binder Pencil pouch – pencils, pens Planner/agenda Dividers Composition/spiral notebooks Notebook paper Folders/sheet protectors

Set up 1.Pencil pouch  Materials used daily - pencils, pens, highlighters, sticky notes  Not used for colored pencils, markers, glue sticks – these are kept in the book bag or in the classroom as required 2. Planner/agenda 3. A supply of notebook paper

Set up (cont.) 4. Subject Dividers in this order:  ELA  Math  Science  Social Studies  Related Arts Each subject area will be subdivided as required by the teacher.

Set up (cont.) 5. Interactive notebooks (spiral or composition books in sheet protectors) should be kept in each subject divided section. 6. Workbooks may be kept in each subject divided section. 7. Work should be in reverse chronological order – latest in front.

Maintenance The front pocket is to be used only for items that will be filed that evening or for items that need to be returned to school the next day – not homework though. Long term items need to be stored in sheet protectors. Periodic “purging” will be conducted by subject area teachers. These items may be stored in lockers if needed at a later time.

Binder Checks Binders will be checked each Friday during AE. During Binder Checks students will engage themselves in reading (DEAR Viking). This is not the time to organize the binder. It should be done ahead of time. Parents will be contacted if binder expectations are continuously not met.
