What kind of holidays do we go on?

 Tourism is a voluntary movement of people.  It usually tends to be for a short while, such as a week or a few days.  Do you know which type of industry tourism belongs to?  Answer: tertiary (service) industry

 Tourism is the fastest growing industry in the world and it is estimated that 10 million people work in the tourist industry.  If a package holiday is one example of a holiday, can you and a partner come up with another five examples?

 Weekend break  Day out  Family holiday  Age-specific holiday (eg 18–30)  Self-catering  Fly/drive  Specialist break (pyramids in Egypt)

What attracts people to destinations?

People become tourists for several reasons:  fresh air  hobbies, such as walking, water sports, mountain biking  to escape crowds  family time  to enjoy the scenery  to visit specialist shops  peaceful environment/thinking time

People also go on longer breaks for other reasons.  Working in groups of two or three engage actively with each other to add to the list of reasons already discussed.  Share your finding with another group.  Share as a whole class.

 Recreation  Visit friends  Adventure  Educational purposes  To meet health needs (spas)  Celebration (birthdays)  Foreign culture  Prestige or status

 There are a number of reasons why people want holidays and providing holidays has also never been easier:  It is possible to advertise your own home or farm as a holiday let, with the right permissions and safety certificates.  A website of your own bed and breakfast publicise it widely and enable it to provide a second income.

 Jobs provide paid holidays  Greater affluence  Longer life expectancy  Early retirement  Cheaper package holidays  Travel is easier  Adverts  Websites  Facebook and Twitter  Length of working week has reduced  Hectic urban lifestyle
