Siamang- Characteristics It is a tree-dwelling ape. It is about 75 cm to 90 cm. Arm span may reach 1.5 m. It is black with shaggy hair. The female usually carries 1 to 2 offspring at a time. It lives in Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula. Their voice is very distinctive. Credit given to Frank Stanton, 1997

Cotinga- Characteristics They live throughout Central America into the southwestern U.S. They are solitary forest- dwellers. They can be 45 cm long. They are brilliantly colored. Their nests range from crude affairs to sophisticated domes. Their calls vary from mooing of a cow to hammers.

Siamang- Diet The siamang eats anything from leaves to fruit. The siamang is also diurnal.

Cotinga- Diet They eat many types of fruit, berries, and insects. Sometimes the birds are given names for their diet.

Siamang- Names It is a gibbon not a monkey. There are 9 species of the genus Hylobatidae. They are divided into 4 subgenus species. They are Hylobatidae syndactylus. Credit given to the Oakland Zoo Video Theater

Cotinga- Names The scientific name for the lovely cotinga is Cotinga amabilis. It comes from the family Cotingidae. Cotinga is the common name for 90 species of birds. Credit given to Jeff Blincow

Similarities Both of my animals have distinctive calls. They are both forest/tree- dwelling animals. They both eat fruit. They are both diurnal.

Differences The siamang’s color is somewhat dull, but the cotinga’s is bright and vivid. The siamang is a mammal, and the cotinga is a bird. Siamang’s gestation period is 7 months. I couldn’t find information on the cotinga’s. Siamangs can live for 25 years. I couldn’t find the cotinga’s life span,

Conclusion When I first got my animals, I thought that there would be no similarities between them, but I was wrong. There are a few similarities between them, but mainly differences.
