Laptop Expectations 1. Laptops will be charged, turned on, and logged in by the beginning of each class. 2. Students should only use programs during class time that they have been given directions to use. 3. Laptops should not be in full screen mode and there should be no additional tabs at the bottom of the screen. 4. Laptop lids should be fully closed when not in use.

Laptop Expectations 5. Laptops should be used for academic purposes only. (music, games, social networking, and other recreational sites can only be visited with express teacher permission.) 6. Laptops are to be carried between classes in the laptop bag. No additional materials are allowed in the bag (pencils, books, binders, etc. should be carried separately.) 7. Absolutely no food or drink around laptops. Ever.

Consequences (laptops) The first time, your laptop will be taken for the class period. You are still responsible for all work assigned during class time. (In class referral) The second time, your laptop will be taken for the day. The third time, your laptop will be taken for an extended period of time and your parent/guardian will be contacted. The fourth time will result in an office referral.

I’m This or That Number a piece of paper from 1-5 You will be given two choices, pick the choice you like the best. 1. Beach or Mountains 2. PS3 or Xbox 3. Spring or Fall 4. Pepperoni or Cheese 5. Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network

This or that…. Now, mingle with the other students in the class. Try to find a person for each number that wrote the same thing as you. Trade papers and sign beside that line. You have to find a different person for each number. Now go around and try to find a 2 nd signature for each number. Again, this has to be a different person from before.

Teacher Expectations 1. Come to every class prepared (homework, books, pencils, paper, etc.) 2. Try at every task. If you don’t know, follow these steps: 1) Read the directions 2) Look in the book 3) Ask someone next to you 4) Ask the teacher. Not knowing how to do something is never an excuse in my class. 3. Treat the teacher and other students with respect (that means the way you want to be treated.) 4. If it isn’t yours, ask before you use or take it.

Teacher Expectations 5. Raise your hand, wait to be recognized, and ask permission before speaking in class or leaving your seat. 6. If you think it might be the wrong thing to do, don’t do it.

Student Expectations Look at your “this or that” sheet. Find the first signature beside #3. This person will be your partner for this activity. With your partner, make a list of things that you and other students should always do in class to make this classroom a positive learning environment. Make a second list. This one should be things you and other students should Never do, that will make this classroom a positive learning environment. You may also add your expectations for me onto your lists.

Consequences 1. Verbal warning 2. Proximity warning 3. In class referral (the 4 by 4) First referral: fill out the reflection paper, get signed by parent, and return Second referral: Lunch detention & phone call to parent Third referral: Removal from classroom Fourth referral: Office referral

What to expect from Science We will be using the WICR approach in every lesson (WICR stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and Reading.) Math is an integral part of science. We will be using it on a consistent basis in this class. Labs—hands on explorations and experiments—are also an integral part of science. Labs participation is the same as class participation.

So what will we be learning about? 1 st Quarter: Scientific inquiry The atmosphere Weather & Climate 2 nd Quarter: Human body systems 3 rd Quarter: Genetics 4 th Quarter: Simple & complex machines Forces and motion

Random fun facts about Mrs. Hill Born on a mountaintop in Tennessee, killed a bear when she was only 3 (not really.) Went to college for science, then decided she wanted to teach science. Loves school nachos. She might try to steal yours. Is an undefeated hula hoop champion. Likes to read fantasy novels and loves comic books. Likes to play video games on the Wii, Xbox, and PC Once saved a squirrel from drowning.

Ways to make me really happy… Following school rules Students treating each other like human beings (being polite to each other and sharing interests) Students being creative and getting excited about science Treating me like a human being. (Saying hi to me in the morning, using manners when you talk to me.) Allowing me to get to know you as a person. Participating in class even if you don’t want to.

Ways to make me really mad… Breaking school rules or violating the class contract Coming up to me at the beginning of class for anything other than an emergency Wasting my or students’ class time. Messing on my desk, taking my stuff, or breaking my stuff. Lying. About anything. I can’t stand it. Leaving a mess behind for me to clean up.
