What is an atom ? Smallest unit of matter. Atoms combine together to form molecules Atoms are made of subatomic particles: Protons Neutrons Electrons

The Periodic Table of Elements Organizes types of atoms by the numbers of protons and neutrons they have. What are some types of atoms (or elements) you’ve heard of?

An Ion is an atom with a charge (+) or (-) Cation = atom that has lost one electron to become positively charged. Anion = an atom that has gained one electron to become negatively charged. Example: table salt = sodium chloride = NaCl = Na +1 and Cl -1

Ionic compounds Example: table salt = sodium chloride = NaCl = Na +1 and Cl -1 Find your ion partners and discover what compound you make!
