André Augustinus 16 September 2002 PVSS & Framework How to get started

André Augustinus 16 September 2002DCS Workshop 2 Background  PVSS II is the selected tool to build the Detector Control System The 4 LHC experiments and several CERN services (e.g. gas, cooling) Free for use at CERN and institutes in the collaboration (contact us for procedure) First line support at CERN

André Augustinus 16 September 2002DCS Workshop 3 Some characteristics  User interface  Scripting  Data archiving & retrieval  Alarm and error handling  Authorisation  Interface to control equipment  Object oriented  Open tool  Multi platform Windows & Linux

André Augustinus 16 September 2002DCS Workshop 4 Framework  The use of a single tool by everybody is no guarantee for homogenous systems Adopting the same C compiler does not mean all programs will be uniform  Design a framework on top of the tool Naturally lead to a uniform system Make available missing functionality (FSM) Avoid duplication of work Common effort between four experiments

André Augustinus 16 September 2002DCS Workshop 5 Framework  Basic idea: The framework should hide PVSS internals for the user User is not required to have in-depth knowledge of PVSS  Building your control system should only be a matter of configuring various building blocks  All (standard) devices should be integrated in the framework  All (standard) communication protocols should be integrated in the framework

André Augustinus 16 September 2002DCS Workshop 6 Framework  Latest version of the framework is just released (Framework 1.2) Analog/Digital inputs/outputs CAEN High Voltage (ISEG coming soon…) Wiener Low Voltage Wiener fan tray (VME crate) Access to SPS & PS data Various other goodies and tools Installation, configuration, trending  Supports OPC and DIM communication  Finite State Machine development tool

André Augustinus 16 September 2002DCS Workshop 7 Why use the framework  Well suited for lab and beam tests and we encourage you to use it! Of course one could use ad-hoc applications (e.g vendor software) –Have to learn several, different, tools You need a (different) application per type of equipment –Will complicate your system (e.g. for shifters) Your investment will be lost, since will not be used in ‘final system’

André Augustinus 16 September 2002DCS Workshop 8 Why use the framework  With the framework you will have a coherent interface to all your equipment  Only a single tool to learn and use  A tool similar to what will be used in the ‘final’ system  The earlier you start using the tool… … the more expertise you can build up … the more feedback we can get … the better we can adapt the tools to your needs

André Augustinus 16 September 2002DCS Workshop 9 Let us know your plans  Let us know what is your planning and are your needs concerning lab and beam tests This allows us to prepare the framework in advance would things you need be missing We can advise you in the choice of hardware to access your equipment (e.g. fieldbus cards)  We are very keen to help you to get going  We would like to get as much as possible experience with the Framework ‘in the field’

André Augustinus 16 September 2002DCS Workshop 10 Getting started  Your equipment  Machine with PVSS installed Currently the preferred platform is windows  Framework downloaded on your machine  Our documentation (in preparation) A ‘step by step’ guide to the framework  Contact us !

André Augustinus 16 September 2002DCS Workshop 11 Getting started  Easy to build your control system in a logical way (hierarchical, multiple views)  Configuration and Operational panels, for all(!) equipment, through the same tool  Easy to integrate your own panels
