Science Fair Hypothesis 8 th Grade Science Brookville Intermediate School

Hypothesis A statement that predicts the outcome of testing the relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable as specified in the problem. Be sure to include your rationale for this prediction. A statement that predicts the outcome of testing the relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable as specified in the problem. Be sure to include your rationale for this prediction.

Hypothesis A common format for the hypothesis is in an “If… then...” statement which specifies how the independent variable will be changed and how you expect the dependent variable to respond to this change. A common format for the hypothesis is in an “If… then...” statement which specifies how the independent variable will be changed and how you expect the dependent variable to respond to this change.

Format Format 1: If the (independent variable) is (changed, increased, decreased), then the (dependent variable) will (change, increase, decrease) because (your rationale or reasoning). Format 1: If the (independent variable) is (changed, increased, decreased), then the (dependent variable) will (change, increase, decrease) because (your rationale or reasoning). Format 2: (Changing, increasing, decreasing) the (independent variable) will cause the (dependent variable) to (change, increase, decrease) because (your rationale or reasoning). Format 2: (Changing, increasing, decreasing) the (independent variable) will cause the (dependent variable) to (change, increase, decrease) because (your rationale or reasoning).

Examples If the angle of a ramp for releasing a ball is increased, then the ball being released will travel down the ramp at a greater speed because gravity will have a greater effect upon the ball. If the angle of a ramp for releasing a ball is increased, then the ball being released will travel down the ramp at a greater speed because gravity will have a greater effect upon the ball. If the concentration of molasses is increased, then the production of carbon dioxide by yeast will increase because more food will be available to the yeast. If the concentration of molasses is increased, then the production of carbon dioxide by yeast will increase because more food will be available to the yeast.

Examples Increasing the angle of a ramp upon which a ball is released will cause the ball to travel down the ramp faster because gravity will have a greater effect upon the ball. Increasing the angle of a ramp upon which a ball is released will cause the ball to travel down the ramp faster because gravity will have a greater effect upon the ball. Increasing the concentration of molasses will increase the production of carbon dioxide by yeast because more food will be available for the yeast. Increasing the concentration of molasses will increase the production of carbon dioxide by yeast because more food will be available for the yeast.

Hypothesis Notice that a hypothesis is used to predict a trend and not just a single outcome. This trend may or may not be true. That is what the experiment will attempt to determine. It is not essential for the hypothesis or your rationale to be true in order for the experiment to be successful. Notice that a hypothesis is used to predict a trend and not just a single outcome. Let’s Practice Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers. He creates two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each group the same task (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. After an hour, Smithers counts how many stacks of papers each group has made. Group A made 1,587 stacks, Group B made 2,113 stacks. Let’s Practice Homer notices that his shower is covered in a strange green slime. His friend Barney tells him that coconut juice will get rid of the green slime. Homer decides to check this this out by spraying half of the shower with coconut juice. He sprays the other half of the shower with water. After 3 days of "treatment" there is no change in the appearance of the green slime on either side of the shower. Homer notices that his shower is covered in a strange green slime.
