PS 520 – Ethics and Standards of Professional Psychology Seminar 2 Karlene Barrett, PhD, CASAC

Seminar Overview Meet and Greet Check In – Questions, Concerns, etc… Feedback on Week 1 Standards (Chapters 4 and 5) Ethics in Research Questions Wrap-Up References

Quick Overview: The Ethics Code: Aspirational Principles (Preamble) Educational Code Enforceable Code

Scope of Application Research Practice of psychology (individual and organizational clients) Institutions (e.g. universities)

General Principles Principle A: Beneficence and Nonmaleficence Principle B: Fidelity and Responsibility Prinicple C: Integrity Principle D: Justice Principle E: Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity (APA, 2002)

Ethical Standards Standard 1: Resolving Ethical Issues Brief review Question: What type of situations would require an informal review to be conducted? Describe how the process would work. What role does peer review play in an informal review? How would you know that this informal review would solve the ethical violations? (Refer to Standard 1.04: Informal Resolution of Ethical Violations, p. 58)

Ethical Standards Standard 2: Competence Brief Review Question: What are some ways that professional psychologists, BCBA’s, and others in the helping professions can ensure they are competent to provide services? How are you planning to ensure you are competent in your field on an on-going basis (after graduation and licensure)? How would you identify and/or address a colleague whom you believe is not competent in an area of practice?

Applying the Ethics Code Seminar Question: One area of conflict is research. The Ethics Code has strong principles and rules governing the harm to humans and animals during research. One case that comes to mind is that of Little Albert by John Watson in Using this case, discuss what ethical rules would be broken today according to the 2002 Ethics Code. Link to Little Albert article:

Your Comments Part 2 of Seminar Question What areas would you look at first to see if there are violations to the Code? What does the Code say about human research today? Under the Code what actions could be taken today in this case? What other issues related to ethics and research arise in this case?
