Colony’s First People The Virginia Colony was built on the lands of Native Americans. The Indians lived in this land many years. The Monacan, and Manahoac lived in the western part of what became Virginia now. The Indians had gathered, and hunted in many of the forests. The Susquehanna farmed and fished in the northern part of Chesapeake Bay. The Powhatan Indians were one of the largest tribes in Virginia back then. Chief Powhatan ruled the group of 30 tribes. These tribes formed the Powhatan Chiefdom. The Powhatan hunted deer and gathered nuts, and also grew corn, and other crops.

Colony’s Early Settlers Many settlers agreed to work for the company, in exchange they would get food, and have a chance to own land. The settlers built a settlement called Jamestown , named after King James I of England. The king had given a grant for the Virginia company for land in North America. The first European settlers were English who settled in Virginia. The English settlers arrived in ships owned by the Virginia Company of London, the company hoped to find gold, and silver.

Life in the Colony As the Virginia colony grew the colonists houses had changed. From where they lived they built homes out of pine and oak trees. Most of the people who lived there lived in one-room houses. By about the 1700s, some of the Virginia colonists had gown wealthy. The wealthier colonists built larger homes. The richest families lived in mansions. When they first started building the colony many of the settlers died of malaria. The others were killed in battles with the Powhatan tribes. The Powhatan and the settlers traded goods with each other. Sometimes, they fought over land. By the 1640’s, the Powhatan lost most of their land. In 1646, the settlers and the Powhatan had a Peace treaty.

2nd Life in the Colony The settlers who came to Jamestown ate what they could find. They mainly ate turtles, corn, and fish. Settlers often grew weak from hunger. Most colonies had few schools. Some of the rich colonists sent their children to schools in England. Boys usually got more schooling than girls did in the colonial times. Boys could study math, Greek, history, and Latin. Some of the colony girls learned how to read and write. Though, most of the girls learned how to cook, sew, and take care of their house. From 1607 to 1775 many people came to the Virginia colony to start a new life.

Work and Trade In 1612, John Rolfe brought tobacco seeds to Virginia. The seeds came from the West Indies. John Rolfe’s tobacco grew very well in the Virginia colony. Tobacco was a major staple in Virginia. The demand was very high for tobacco plants in Virginia. In 1619, a Dutch ship came along with 20 Africans to Virginia.

2nd Work and Trade By about the end of the 1600’s, the Virginia planters didn’t use indentured servants, instead they used slaves. Slaves worked on the plantations many hours without pay. The tobacco season lasted nearly the whole year. They planted the seeds in the spring. In the fall, they harvested the tobacco. By about the 1660’s the Virginia colonists sent about 10 million pounds of tobacco to England.

Community and Religion on the Colony King James I of England was the ruler of the Virginia colony. Even though he was the king of England he could not easily controlling the colony’s daily life. In 1619, King James I created a local government called the House of Burgesses.

2nd Community and Religion on the Colony The new government set down taxes for the Virginia colony. Members of the House of Burgesses helped create laws for the Virginia Colony. By about the mid-1700’s were very tired of paying taxes to Great Britain.

Becoming a State By about the mid-1700’s Virginia’s population was about nearly 230,000.The colony was very crowded. Virginia colonists started looking for new land. Both the British and French wanted to control more land in America.

Statehood and Number Statehood date and number: June 25, 1788 and 10th state. That is the date and the number that Virginia became a state and when it joined the United States of America.
