EFFECTS OF SMOKING AFTER DELIVERY Mothers who smoke during pregnancy and while breastfeeding place their babies at increased risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Infants of women who smoke are at increased risk for ear infections, respiratory illness, asthma and colds, due to the accumulation of passive smoke particles in the lungs.
