Birth of the Charger In 1964 Pontiac started making the GTO, this made Dodge want to make a muscle car but they could not decide what they wanted to make. Until 1965 when Lynn Townsend went in for a meeting about what they were going to put out. They decided to go with something like the Barracuda, but they under specific instruction to not make it a competitor for the Barracuda. Thus, the 1966 Dodge Charger.

The Dodge Charger was first introduced at the Rose Bowl, as the “Leader of the Dodge Rebellion.” In 1966, the Dodge Charger was brought to NASCAR in hopes to make the car a winner! The differences between the 66 and 67 were few and far between. Despite the cars success in NASCAR the sales in 1967 were cut by half, making it 15,788.

After the drop of sales in 1967, it became very clear that they needed to change something about the 1968 Charger. They changed the body style. They also added R/T on the back meaning Road/Track. In 1969, the Charger did not change much either, though they did add SE. It could be it’s own package or added to the R/T. The show Dukes of Hazzard, famed the 1969 Charger. The show itself purchased hundreds of Chargers and generally damaged at least one car per episode Charger changed slightly again. This would be the last and rarest year of the 2 nd generation Charger.

The 3 rd generation Charger debuted in The Dodge Super Bee made its move from the Coronet line to the Charger line in But, soon after the move it was discontinued. In 1972, the Rallye option replaced the R/T option. The SE option was differentiated from the Rallye option. 1973, there were many little options that changed. Sales were up in the 108,000 margin, highest ever with the era. 1974, mainly just a rerun of the 1973 Charger but it came with many more color options.

Beginning in 1975, the Charger became based on the Cordoba. The SE was the only option that the Charger came with. The model range in 1976 became that of 4: base, Charger Sport, Charger SE, and the Charger Daytona. In 1977, the base and the Sport Chargers were dropped because they were only offered for one year. Only the SE and the Daytona were offered after this. Sales dropped to 36, , only 2,800 Chargers were produced, likely to use up the leftover parts. After it was replaced with the Dodge Magnum.

2009 Charger There are two different brands of Chargers for the 2009 lineup. The original Dodge Charger Base, which has lots of modern day touchups done to it. The Dodge Charger SRT8, which has the Dodge Challenger suspension tuning for a nicer ride.
