GREENLAND KOMMUNEQARFIK SERMERSOOQ 1

GREENLAND  Far north in the Arctic is the largest island in the world – Greenland, with a size of km 2 ( sq mi) and with a population of people, it is the least densely populated country in the world.  The map shows the inhabitable areas with green, the white is ice.  To comparison is the size of Great Britain km 2. ( sq mi)  An example of distances In Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq - From Nuuk to Paamiut, which is the nearest city, the distance is 300 km. The only way to be transported is by plane (1 hour) or by ship (12 hours).  There are no roads between the Cities or villages in Greenland. 2

INFORMATION ABOUT GREENLAND  Greenland is a former colony of Denmark, in 1953 the colonial status was rescinded, and Greenland became an equal part of the Danish Kingdom. In 1979 Greenland was granted Home Rule, and became responsible for many political areas (education, health- care etc.). In 2009 Greenland assumed self-determination. Next step for the Greenlandic people is independence.  The economic in Greenland is based on the fishing industry, which is the dominating sector with some 90% of its exports.  The ethnicity is 88% Inuit and 12% North European. 3

KOMMUNEQARFIK SERMERSOOQ  In January 2009 became the merging between five municipalities in Greenland a reality. The name of this new Municipality was Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq.  The size of KS is Km 2, but the population only counts people. The main office is placed in Nuuk, which also is the capital of Greenland, and is the largest city of the merged cities, with a population of  On this picture compared and visualized with Denmark. 4

CHALLANGES  The infrastructure is a challenge in the new Municipality.  Another challenge is the level of educated employees. 5

CHALLANGES  Thirdly there is great difference in how these educated people are working/living in Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq.  Finally a challenge in urbanisation. 6
