What in the World are Heteronyms?? Heteronyms are words that are spelled identically but have different meanings when pronounced differently. For example: Lead and Lead The tour guide will lead the way through the museum. Lead is very heavy metal.

Let’s take a look at some more Heteronyms! See if you can figure out the correct pronunciation based on the rest of the sentence.

Pick the Right Pronunciation! Please close the door on your way out. Is Washington close to Arlington?

Pick the Right Pronunciation! Carlos plays bass in his band. James loves to go bass fishing.

Pick the Right Pronunciation! An archer carries a bow and arrows. Maria took a bow at the end of her performance.

Pick the Right Pronunciation! Hey, there’s a tear in my shirt!! That song always brings a tear to my eye.

Pick the Right Pronunciation! “I won the art contest!” Anna exclaimed. Unhappy with the outcome of her court case, Prya decided to contest the verdict.
