Essential Question #3 If you were in Japan at the time at what level of the Samurai Society would you like to be (Emperor, Shogun, Daimyo, Samurai, or Peasant)? Explain your reasoning.

Question 1 1. Who were the Daimyo and why did they hire Samurai (pg. 212)? A: The Daimyo were Japan’s large landowners. They hired Samurai to defend them and their property.

Question 2 2. How were samurai repaid for their military service? (pg. 213) A: Samurai were paid in either land or rice. If they were given land they would often have peasant farmers work on it and give the samurai money or food.

Question 4 4. What did the leader of the Minamoto clan do to the emperor and for himself once he had defeated Japan’s other major clan? (pg. 213) (Use the words figurehead and shogun properly in your answer.) A:  The leader of the Minamoto clan took the title of shogun, or a general who ruled Japan in the emperor’s name. He let the emperor appear to have rule even though it was he who really had all the power. Thus the emperor was just a figurehead.

Question 5 5. What was one of the benefits of being a samurai? (pg 214) A: Common people had to treat the samurai with respect. If they did not, then they could be killed.

Question 6 6. (Short Answer) What were all of the rules that went along with being a samurai? (pgs. 214-215) Use the word Bushido properly in your answer).   A: There were many rules that went along with being a samurai. One example is that samurai couldn’t attend certain types of entertainment, such as theater. They also couldn’t take part in trade or commerce. Samurai had to follow Bushido, a strict code of rules. Under these rules samurai had to be brave and honorable fighters, live simple and disciplined lives, and be loyal to his lord no matter what. These were the rules that went along with being a samurai.

Question 11 11. What were the three major factors in the samurai period lasting so long? (pg. 217) A: The ruling shogun closed Japan off from the rest of the world in the 1630s to prevent Japan from becoming too much like Europe, banned guns, and limited technology.

Be the Samurai Project 50 Points -We will be doing a project on the different aspects of Samurai life. For this we will be using your History Alive (RED Books), pgs. 241-250. -Each group is responsible for answering the worksheet questions for their section in a skit and also with a visual (written on a Poster (BIG!). You will be graded on a P (presentation) 20 Points, (2.5 Minutes Maximum) I (information) 20 Points, E (Entertaining) 10 Points Scale.

Be the Samurai Project Step 1: Pick a group of 3-4 Step 2: Pick a : Facilitator (someone double up if you have a group of 3): Keep group on track, talks to me if there are problems. Costume/Prop Designer: Makes sure costumes/props are high quality. Playwright: Makes sure that script is entertaining. Historian: Makes sure information is factual/questions answered. Step 3: Have the facilitator come see me with your group’s section choice.
