Succession Planning Sue Van Voorhis Director, Academic Support Resources

Definition: Succession Planning: A process for preparing people to meet an organization’s needs for talent over time. Focuses on developing people rather than naming them as replacements. Goal is to build strength through the organization so that, whenever a vacancy occurs, the organization has qualified candidates internally that may be considered for advancement. Replacement Planning: Identification of backups for top-level positions, and identified on an organization’s charts. Usually lists 3 people for each position and will indicate how ready each person is to assume the role of the current job incumbent. Academic Support Resources
