Toledo Rocket Football Develop Winning Drills

Winning Drills “It never changes. Football is a game of repetition, mental and physical. You may try to articulate it a little different, but it's the same thing: Get better players, make fewer mistakes, and drill the fundamentals into your players' heads.” Bob Stoops “The secret to winning is constant, consistent management.” Tom Landry

Individual / Group Drills Name – Players can quickly identify – Quick, Concise, and Descriptive – “READ 1, 2, 3” Outcome – What you want the drill to produce in the game – “To execute throws to our second and third read in a game.” Purpose – What the drill is specifically working on to produce the outcome – “To practice having good footwork when going from our first read to our second read to our third read.”

Individual / Group Drills Position(s) – What position(s) are going to be involved in the drill – “Quarterbacks (and receivers)” Start – What starts the drill – Minimize the use of a whistle to start a drill – Use movement or a cadence as much as possible – “Cadence / Snap” Finish – What ends the drill – Use whistle if it applies – “Completion of the pass”

Individual / Group Drills Equipment Needs – List anything and everything needed – Be as descriptive as possible – “3 Footballs and 30 yards of the field from hash to sideline”

Individual / Group Drills Description / Mechanics – Include as much information as possible including positioning of coach and other players involved – “Start with one QB in a gun (or under center) position. Usually position QB on or near a hash. Other QB’s (or WR’s) should be lined up in positions where most throws take place. Usual spots include flare, comeback, curl, and dig. The coach and other QB’s should stand at least 10 yards from the LOS behind the QB. The coach should then designate each QB (or WR) by a number (usually 1 through 4). At the snap, QB will take a 5 step drop with a hitch. As he is hitting his 5 th step, coach will call out one of the numbers he has given the routes. The QB (or WR) with that number should raise his hands. The QB needs to get his feet set to make the throw at the target the number signifies and then make the throw as quickly as possible. The coach can force the QB to move from one receiver to the next by saying “No” followed by a second number. (i.e. “3 no 1”) This forces the QB to move his feet and reset himself like in a game. ”

Individual / Group Drills Categories – Everyday Drills – 1 Time / Week – 1 Time / Month Types – Teaching – Reps – Competitive – Group Tempo Full Speed Tag Off Thud (No Cutting) Thud (Cutting) Tackle (QB Live) Tackle (QB Not Live) Other

Individual / Group Drills C QB

Individual / Group Drills Organized Drill List – Keep Track “What you see on film is either taught or tolerated” – Develop drills to fix the issues you see on film or at practice Have a Drill Progression – Keep it simple and master the basics first Chuck Noll and John Wooden Take Notice of Your Position in the Drill – See It All (If Possible) – Be aware of players not in the drill – Be aware of other drills, etc.

Winning Drills “Every drill is about competing. Coach is trying to teach those who don't know how to compete to compete. He lets us know that it is not all right to lose at anything, in any drill around here.”

Competitive Drills Similar to Individual / Group Drills – Name – Outcome – Purpose – Start / Finish – Equipment Needs – Description / Mechanics Toughness, Conditioning, Team Building, Leadership Development, Accountability Athletic Development – Agility, Strength, Explosion, Quickness, Speed
