XML Formats for SCORM-Based Content October 2004 Introduction by Robby Robson

Why SCORM?  Personalized  Effective  Efficient  Measurable Computer Managed Instruction (CMI) Management of learning plans via competencies and enabling objectives Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) Adaptive delivery of content based on test results c c  Reusable  Economical  Measurable Learning Management Systems (LMS) Management of learning environment in an enterprise setting Web-based Training (WBT) Delivery of content in a “new” medium Information Management Structuring, distribution & utilization of information resources Content Management Systems Structuring, distribution & utilization of information resources c  Customized  Immediate  Effective  Distributed  Measurable  Metadata  SCOs  XML  CORDRA

What’s the Problem? Customization requires  manipulation of internal structure of SCOs  Intelligence on part of authoring & delivery environments  Standardized representations that separate Content Presentation Structure Context Behaviors SCORE Project Example

Who Cares?  Applications: Learning, Education &Training Performance Support Documentation Library Services Publishing Others …  Stakeholders Training & Education Organizations Organizations & people who participate in the content life cycle Organizations that develop & maintain software

Goals of Workshop  Purpose Asses the issues, benefits, and maturity of applying XML to SCORM-based content.  Outcomes Information sharing on the ways that XML is being applied to SCORM-based content and the capabilities it enables; Identification of high-priority capabilities that are sufficiently technically mature to consider a general SCORM solution. Guidance to ADL-sponsored research projects exploring strategic emerging capabilities; Identification of common goals and next steps, including a recommendation on a possible open initiative to define an XML content strategy for SCORM.
