Matters on Postgraduate Studies at FBE From November 2012 to November 2013 Office of PG Studies at FBE

Strength 413 PG candidates including 253 PhD Ample workstation for students Supervision staff:student is 1:5 Multi-disciplinary research Young academics are excited to supervise

CONCERNS o Declining admission applications (Drop of almost 50%). o In PhD studies, Malaysians are less than international students o Uneven distribution of supervision o Quality of supervision. o Procedure/regulation awareness among students, supervisors & examination panel. o Plagiarism. o GOTs: UTM is 36 months, MyRA2 is 42 months o Low IF publication relative to the Engineering faculties o Others (see next list).

Irregularities done by PG candidates Not presence at the faculty to attend colloquiums, workshops, open talks and seminars. As a result, his or her workstation is generally unoccupied at B12 or B07. Thus he or she is void from peer discussion and peer instruction. Pestering supervisors to approve an thesis even though the supervisors are not fully satisfied with his or her submission. Not participating in PGSS activities Being a superman: (1) Being editor-in-chief, (2) practicing a full-time job, doing MBA at UPM and doing PhD at UTM, (3) Claiming reviewer of an IF journal not relevant to his discipline of study

Irregularities done by PG candidates Submitting thesis at deadline of submission leaving little time for PG Offices to check the accuracy of the thesis Most Zamalah scholars failed to assist PGSS activities. Full time students only come to the faculty at progress report presentation.

Irregularities done by supervisor mentioned by candidates Non-authors in my journal and conference papers Supervisor did not read my thesis thoroughly before submitting to SPS for viva Supervisor took three months to read my first draft Supervisor failed to keep his or her promise on appointment to discuss my research progress Supervisor was not critical in advising my research

Irregularities done by supervisor and graduate faculties mentioned by PG Office Not knowing the requirements of thesis as stipulated in UTM Thesis Manual Not adding new examiners in GSMS Refusal to become chairman and assistant chairman Asking for favor from examiner before the viva
