Using Manure as Fertilizer Saves $ On this 120 acre farm with 40 cows the manure is worth $5000 It is fertilizer already on the farm, as is the nitrogen left by legume crops

2 It’s making the best use of nutrients

A Real 126 acre Corn & Soybean Farm

Corn following Soybeans: N rate 40 lbs too high

2013 Soybeans P 2 O 5 rate 65 lbs too high

On this 126 acre farm nutrient management saves $5,000 in 2013 soybeans and save $4,000 in 2014 corn by not buying excess fertilizer

What 97 CAFOs Liked Most About Their NMP 7 Useful maps for record keeping Keeps manure and fertilizer records in 1 place Reduces risk of environmental problems and Liabilities Provides basis to respond to complaints Increased profitability by reducing inputs and improving yields Clear roles & responsibilities

Survey Simplifying NM Planning Suggestions from 97 CAFOs CAFO owners find their NMPs moderately to very easy to implement they update them regularly are supported by their consultant in understanding and implementing the plan and they recognize that the NMP serves several important functions Important improvements could be: better tools for recordkeeping electronic options for submittal & updating field maps that include setbacks and application rates a simple user interface so farmers could update the plan themselves

9 DATCP increased acres 24% and NR243 increased 30% all other categories lower in 2012 than in Nutrient Management Plan Acres Reported by Program (in thousands of acres)

2012 NM 3,867plans submitted on 1,949,856 acres covering 22% of WI’s 9 Million cropland acres = a 5% increase in acres from % of County Cropland covered by 2012 NM plan acres It's important to preserve farmland, but it's just as important to preserve the quality of that land, so it keeps on producing for the future. These producers are leading the way, showing that you can protect our land and waters and be profitable. These producers are leading the way, showing that you can protect our land and waters and be profitable.
