Jan Van Eyck By: Clark Kelley P-1

Background Information He was born in the Netherlands. He started painting in Bruges. Has a brother, Hubert Van Eyck, who was also a famous painter. He was started painting for a job called court painter for Duke Phillip.

Interesting Facts Jan Van Eyck was considered one of the best European painters of the 15 th century. He and his brother, Hubert Van Eyck did some of their paintings together. He completed 15 paintings in only 61 years.

Oil Painting Misconception Lots of people give credit to Jan van Eyck for inventing the oil painting technique, however Jan van Eyck didn’t actually invent the oil painting technique. He only made changes to the technique which made it more creative, perfected, and effective. He was often referred to as the “Father of oil painting.”

Other Facts His job paid well. While he was Court painter for Duke Phillip, he did secret missions for the duke. One of these missions included a trip to Portugal in which Jan van Eyck had a negotiation that resulted in the marriage of Duke Phillip and Isabelle of Portugal.

Self Portrait This is possibly a self portrait of Jan van Eyck, Historians aren’t 100% sure.

Most Famous Painting This is probably his most famous painting. It is a painting of Giovanni Arnolfini and his bride.

La Madone au Chanoine Van der Paele This painting is called La Madone au Chanoine Van der Paele. It shows a good example of Oriental carpets during the renaissance.
