There are two main ways we protect children, youth and vulnerable adults and the people who work with them in our congregation. Selection Supervision Most of your church's Safe Sanctuary policy deals with these two topics.

Selecting the most responsible, trustworthy people to work with our children, youth and vulnerable adults creates an atmosphere of physical, emotional and spiritual safety.

Some RECOMMENDED Selection-related policies Application form Participation Covenant Interview form Criminal Background Check DHS Child Maltreatment Registry Reference Checks Driver's License Conduct interview with each applicant Individual consultation with people with personal history of child abuse/neglect. Active involvement with the congregation for at least 6 months.

Providing adequate supervision for people entrusted in our care protects children from being abused and the adults who care for them protection from false allegations and potential litigation.

Some RECOMMENDED Supervision-related policies 2 non-related adults in each classroom Some churches have adult/child ratios included in their safe sanctuary policies If only 1 adult is present, provide a floater to go between classrooms No child ever left alone Adult 18 years and over in supervisory positions Should be 5 years older than oldest person you're supervising Windows on doors Open doors or half-doors Open line of visibility Parents can observe any time Annual Safe Sanctuary training CPR/First Aid WSI if going to water locale without a lifeguard
