Warm Up for 2/23/2015 On your rough draft of your research proposal, complete the following tasks: Underline every fact. Circle every citation.

Happy Mechanics Monday! Citing Facts in Scientific Writing Whenever you cite a fact in scientific writing, you must cite a source from where you received that fact. ASSUME NOTHING! EXAMPLE: The sky is blue. According to NASA, when the sunlight reaches the Earth’s atmosphere “blue is scattered more than the other colors because it travels as shorter smaller waves”(Erickson 1).

Essay Workshop Instructions If you do not have your completed rough draft today, please sit away from everyone else and complete your rough draft. Staple your Writer’s Checklist and Rubric to your rough draft. For this workshop, we will be rotating one essay clockwise around the circle during each round. Please take this workshop seriously and provide the best feedback you can. If you discover any typos or mistakes during this workshop, please correct as needed.

Hand over your essay to the person next to you in a clockwise circle.

ROUND ONE: Fact-Checking STEP ONE: Read the essay. do not understand, write a squiggly line STEP TWO: If there is something that you do not understand, write a squiggly line underneath it. This shows the writer that s/he needs to add more background for the general technical audience to understand. read a fact Put a star next to it if it needs a citationcheck mark if it has an in-text citation STEP THREE: Every time that you read a fact, make sure that it is underlined. Put a star next to it if it needs a citation. Put a check mark if it has an in-text citation.

Hand over your essay to the person next to you in a clockwise circle.

ROUND TWO: Writer’s Checklist STEP ONE: Read the entire essay. STEP TWO: Mark each component in a different color on the Writer’s checklist if it is present. STEP THREE: If the writer is missing any of the necessary components (including the sub-bullets in each category) make a list at the bottom of the research proposal.

Hand over your essay to the person next to you in a clockwise circle.

ROUND THREE: Tone and Mechanics grammar and mechanics STEP ONE: Read and edit the essay for grammar and mechanics. “you,” “I,” or “we.” informal phrases STEP TWO: Circle any time the writer uses “you,” “I,” or “we.” Additionally, circle any informal phrases that are not appropriate for a formal academic research proposal. in-text citation STEP THREE: Make sure each in-text citation is correct in MLA format: “Quote” (Author #).

Return the research proposal to its rightful owner.

Homework REVISE AND EDIT YOUR RESEARCH PROPOSAL. Remember that each fact needs a citation. You must write in a formal academic tone. THE FINAL DRAFT IS DUE ON FRIDAY (2/27)
