Mission Possible! Combining HE Teaching with Academic Research Darren Paffey University of Southampton 10 November 2005

Outline My route into teaching/research Initial reactions and first impressions Joys Difficulties Issues to be aware of A few tips

Joys Interesting to link research with teaching Teaching is rewarding! Valuable experience

Difficulties Pull of opposing loyalties/priorities “Urgent” vs. “important” Separable tasks?

Issues to be aware of Habits and strategies change “Protected time”

A few tips… Establish a ‘rhythm’ – Whatever you’re doing at that moment, do it 100% Avoid clashes between deadlines for research and teaching Keep teaching days together if possible Discuss both sides with supervisor/line manager Use vacations well!

Mission possible!
