Math 10 Lesson (3) Using Data to Predict: Focus L Scatterplots

Why it is important to use a large random sample? (accuracy of data representation)

What do you already know about scatterplots from previous years?

Scatterplots – a graph which uses ordered pairs to compare two variables. Example: Make a scatterplot using the above data. Once all of the data is placed make a “line of best fit” (touching as many points as possible).

How to set up a graph Use a full sheet of graph paper –title ( ___ vs____) –dependant variable on vertical axis (y) –independent variable on horizontal axis (x) –use good scales that fit the data

Interpolate- data predicted within the data plotted on the graph. Extrapolate – data predicted outside of the data plotted on the graph. Ex: a)How old would a tree be that measured 70 cm in height? (about 5.5) Intepolate b) How tall would a tree be that is 12 years old? (135 – 145 cm) extrapolate

Using the line of best fit will help you to make predictions of data you do not have results for. (extrapolate or interpolate)

Prepare a graph with the tree data.

Answer the following questions: How old would a tree be that measured 70 cm in height? (about 5.5) How tall would a tree be that is 12 years old? (135 – 145 cm)
