Candidate Merit Determination

Section 1 (7 points) (8 points) Meets Lieutenants Job Description Meets Captain Job Description

Section II The Chief shall award points up to the maximum indicated in each of the listed criterion. A three-year history is used.

Department Participation (2 pts) The following areas are considered: –Participation on specialty teams –Acceptance of non-mandatory overtime –Response to “call-backs” –Participation in special assignments –Participation in department community functions Open Houses, spaghetti dinners, ect

Evaluations (3 pts) (4 pts) The following areas will be considered: –Supervisory reviews –Training performance –Physical ability –Merit/discipline files

Section III (3 pts) (5 pts) District Familiarization: –The Chief will construct and administer a written examination which may cover portions from the following areas District policies and procedures, rules and regulations Standard Operating Guidelines Collective Bargaining Agreement Operation, capability of emergency equipment Location of streets within the District

Section IV (5 pts) (6 pts) General Traits: –The Chief, Deputy Chief, Shift Battalion Chiefs, Captains and Lieutenants will evaluate each Lieutenant candidate. The scores of the evaluations will be totaled and averaged. Point values will be assigned based upon these averages and distributed to each candidate accordingly.

Emergency Performance Each candidate will be evaluated with regard to their emergency scene performance. Among the factors considered will be: –Remaining calm, thinking clearly –Assessing situations, controlling situations –Giving proper consideration to safety –Taking appropriate action –Proper technical execution

Leadership Leads people by example –Effectiveness in motivating others –Informal Peer leader –Making unpopular decisions when necessary –Allowing group problem solving –Others willing to follow your lead

Teamwork Contributions to the group Support of the groups goals –Even when individual personally disagrees Support of other team members and supervisor Support of organization Understands and promotes the concept of the Fire District Team
