“Happiness can exist only in acceptance.” –George Orwell. George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair. He was a novelist, literary critic, essayist, advocate and fighter for political change, and man of contradictions. Some of his publishes are Burmese Days, A Clergyman’s Daughter and The Road to Wigan Pier. Throughout his life, George Orwell published well known books, and tried to make the best out of his life. Introduction

George Orwell was born on June 25, 1903, in the Bengal region of Eastern India. The Bengal region was a British territory. He was the only son of Richard Walmesley Blair, and Ida Mabel Blair. At the age of one, He moved to England with his mother and sisters. George Orwell faimly was not rich nor poor, but they could not afford sending him to a well-known school as his mother wanted. Later on, he attended St. Cyprian’s school on a scholarship. Early Life

George Orwell displayed academic talent since a very young age. His mother wanted him to attend a well-known school, but they were not able to afford it. Orwell earned a scholar ship at St. Cyprian’s boarding school. As school work, Orwell write two poems that later on earned him two scholarships to Wellington and Eton Colleges. In January 1917, Blair took up the place at Wellington but left on May 1917 to Eton College. He did not finish studying and left on December 1921 at the age of 18½. Education

Career Novelist, essayist, and being an author were all some of George Orwell's jobs. In April 1932 Orwell became a teacher at The Hawthorns High School. In the summer of 1933 Blair left Hawthorns to become a teacher at Frays College, in Uxbridge, West London. Frays college was a bigger opportunity for him to continue his writing with. During the year Orwell caught a chill that developed into pneumonia, many believed that it would be the end of his life. After being discharged from the hospital on January 1934, he returned to his hometown and was supported by his parents. Orwell never returned to teaching, but never stopped writing.

Personal Life Orwell's first wife, Eileen O’Shaughnessy died before him. During their marriage, they adopted a child named Richard. Orwell had many other relationships while he was married. His main concern was that if girls would find him attractive. In a letter to another lady he wrote “I was sometimes unfaithful to Eileen, and I also treated her badly, and I think she treated me badly, too, at times, but it was a real marriage, in the sense that we had been through awful struggles together and she understood all about my work.” After Eileen's death Orwell felt deeply lonely and was desperate for another wife.

Late Years In December 1947, Orwell was diagnosed with tuberculosis. His health has continued to decline ever since. In the summer of 1949, Orwell married Sonia Brownell. Their wedding took place in the hospital room. On the 21 st of January 1950, an artery burst in Orwell’s lungs, killing him at the age of 46. Orwell's grave does not mention his well- known pen name. The grave carries these simple words, “Here lies Eric Arthur Blair, born 25 June 1903, died 21 January 1950”.

Conclusion Through his up’s and downs, George Orwell never stopped writing. Orwell never settled for what he was able to do, but exceeded his limits. In school, his writing enabled him to get a scholarship. While working as a teacher in a high school, his writing took him to another level by teaching in a college. Not only did he write books, but he also wrote poems and essays. Even the letters he wrote to people consisted of many pages, making it sound more like a novel.
