Different Types of Eruption Learning Objective: To be able to identify and describe the two different types of eruption

Effusive Eruptions… Key Ideas: -Occur when hot, runny magma reaches surface -Gasses can escape more easily so less pressure builds up -Outpouring of lava that flows downhill easily -Create shallow sloped volcanoes TASK: Draw, and label, a brief diagram that shows this type of eruption

Explosive Eruptions… Key Ideas: -Occur when cooler, more viscous magma reaches the surface -Gasses are trapped so pressure builds up -This pressure causes explosions that blast out rocks and lava -Create steeper sloped volcanoes TASK: Draw, and label, a brief diagram that shows this type of eruption

Different Shapes of Volcano Learning Objective: To be able to describe the different shapes of volcano and how they relate to the different types of eruption

Different Shapes of Volcanoes Shield Volcanoes -Result from effusive eruptions -Magma flow easily so large, gently sloped volcanoes are formed -Lava flows in all directions to create large, wide volcanoes -Built almost entirely of fluid lava flows -Usually made of basalt

Different Shapes of Volcanoes Cinder Cones -Result from moderate explosive eruptions -Single steep sided volcanic cones created -Built mainly of ash cinders that build up -Made of basalt with layers of ash

Different Shapes of Volcanoes Composite Cones -Result from moderate explosive eruptions -Build up over many outpourings of lava so often very large -More than one vent due to build up of gasses -Mainly made of andesite

Different Shapes of Volcanoes Dome Volcanoes -Result when thick magma and gas builds up -This pressure leads to a bulge at the summit -Often lead to huge explosive eruptions once pressure is released -Mainly made of rhyolite

Different Shapes of Volcanoes Caldera -Huge crater created after an explosive eruption has blown the top off a volcano -Occurs due to the magma being very thick which causes lots of gas to build up -Mainly made of rhyolite

Effects on the Land Learning Objective: To be able to describe effects volcanoes have on four components of natural environments (the ‘land’)

Different Components of Natural Environments 1)Topography 2)Vegetation 3)Waterways/drainage 4)Soil Relief, ‘lay of the land’, landscape, etc. Plantlife, forests, short term and long term Rivers, streams, link to topography? Fertility (positive and/or negative)

Task… What Will Happen… 1)Mr Sykes will give you a number – 1, 2, 3 or 4 2)Move to your designated part of the classroom 3)Mr Sykes will give your group one of the components 4)Brainstorm ideas about ‘how volcanoes can impact on your component’ 5)You need to produce a brainstorm/list of ideas to share with Mr Sykes and the rest of the class (needs to be handed in at end of class)

Homework… What You Need To Do: 1)Receive a handout from Mr Sykes 2)Use the words at the bottom to fill in the paragraph 3)Have this with you next lesson so we can check your work…
